Highlights from Comedy Central’s ‘Comedy Awards’
The Comedy Awards made its inaugural run last night, and guess what—it was actually a funny awards show. (James Franco and Anne Hathaway were nowhere to be seen.) Tina Fey admitted that it was all a ploy to gather some of the most riotous people in showbiz together in one room, telling the crowd, “All award shows are bullshit made up clubs that people start to give each other prizes, so I want to thank Comedy Central for realizing that we could do that.” We couldn’t agree more. Here is a rundown of last night’s show.
Highlights: Lonely Island ft Akon “I Just Had Sex” The SNL boys performed their short with some help from Akon, and Andy Samberg’s silly lines, like “It felt so good when I did it with my penis,” are even funnier live, with a backup choir and obnoxious signs that simply read “Sex.”
Jon Stewart vs. Stephen Colbert Bruce Willis gave a surprisingly decent introduction for the Best Late Night Comedy Series award, but Stewart had his hands on the trophy for less than five minutes. After watching Stewart win Emmys for The Daily Show eight years in a row, Colbert needed to tell him one thing: “You can go fuck yourself.”
The Eddie Murphy Icon Award Tracy Morgan introduced Comedy Central’s first Icon Award by threatening to fight someone for a trophy in the parking lot and then declaring that Eddie Murphy is his biological father. The Eddie Murphy montage was a great journey down memory lane.
Lowlights: Best Comedy Film The Other Guys won the best comedy award over Easy A, Cyrus, Get Him to the Greek, and Kick Ass. It was the first, and most disappointing award of the night, but watching Will Ferrell and Adam McKay get mobbed on stage by “all of the films producers” got a good laugh or two.
Jon Cryer’s Rap Record Charlie Sheen’s Two and a Half Men co-star admitted that he has plenty of “free time” while the show is out of production, and that therefore he’s decided to make a rap record. It isn’t very good.
