‘Game of Thrones’ Getting an Online Video Game

Though there aren’t any scientific reports to back this up, something tells me that there may be some overlap between the gamer community and Game of Thrones fans. A year into the screen life of the hit fantasy series, HBO has realized this potentially amazing marketing opportunity by teaming up with German gaming group Bigpoint to develop a massive multiplayer online role playing game (MMORPG) based on the show. Bigpoint previously developed a MMORPG based on Battlestar Galactica and like that one, the Game of Thrones game will be free. It’ll take place in Westeros, be based on the show, yada yada yada, who cares. It’s a Game of Thrones videogame for free! We’re going to play this damn thing all night long.

If this is really free to play, there had better be some restrictions. Otherwise, everyone is going to just play Tyrion, and be goddamn near-impossible to hit with a sword. More details will be released during next week’s Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, so stay tuned. Meanwhile, Game of Thrones returns to HBO on April 1, which is less than a month away.
