Trailer: ‘Bad Luck Banging or Loony Porn’ Reminds How Uptight We Can Still Be About Sex

A July 14, 2020 headline in Balkan Insight blared, “Rightists Are Taking Romania Back to the Dark Ages.” The article goes on to document how ideological assaults from the right are threatening necessary sex education programs in Romania’s schools. But as we are all too keenly aware in these neo-puritanical times, while the right continues in its attempts to stifle our essential sexuality, many on the left are simply seeking to take all the bloody fun out of it.

A new Romanian film addressing humanity’s unlimited capacity for being uptight about the oldest subject in history is already causing a bit of a stir – and really, when is the last time you remember anything from east of Austria causing an international cultural stir? The rather cheeky title might certainly have something to do with it – and we’re honestly not sure if Bad Luck Banging or Loony Porn (in theaters November 19 via Magnolia Pictures) was just a translation problem, or if it may just be so clever that its meaning has shot straight over our heads.

It’s from director Radu Jude, who is considered one of Europe’s genuine contemporary auteurs, noted especially for the 2018 dark comedy I Do Not Care If We Go Down in History as Barbarians. The first English trailer for his latest has just been released, and it begins with a purposely, comically exaggerated narration informing us, “She’s Emi. An eminent romantic teacher from Little Paris (an old nickname for Bucharest). In a single moment, her whole life is turned upside down.”

Indeed, it is turned upside down by a sex video of her and her boyfriend that gets leaked on the internet, and winds up being viewed by her students (and everyone else), in the prestigious school where she teaches. The narrator then goes on to recite the catalog of all those who will be sitting in judgement of Emi (played by Katia Pascariu), most especially the parents of those same students. As she sits on “trial,” we even see one of the mothers holding up an iPad, playing back the sex scene for all to see – the perfect farcical moment for our new tech-sex reality.

Ultimately, Bad Luck Banging is meant as a condemnation of outmoded conservatism and moral hypocrisy, as one of the parents holding the teacher’s fate in her hands has in the past offered her bribes to raise her kid’s grade. But it’s also an incisive reminder of just what is at stake, as we continue to misguidedly upload our private lives to the digital universe.

So, you know…think before you post.
