Swish! You Can Still Go Holiday Skiing in Aspen

As Christmas tunes blare away all around us, it’s hard not to consider how some of the lyrics have either been recontextualized, or just simply don’t apply any longer. Certainly a ‘Holly Jolly Christmas’ is one a considerable number of people won’t be having. And as for ‘I’ll Be Home For Christmas,’ well, we probably won’t.

If the escalating pandemic is indeed forcing you to spend the holidays alone, or even just as a couple, the words “socially distanced ski weekend” certainly spring to mind. And though flying may be a bit tricky right now, however you get there, Aspen is very much open for your swishing and swooshing entertainment. And the still very new (it debuted last autumn) W Aspen has got the hook to get you there.

Indeed, from the moment of its opening, the W’s Living Room lounge, and rooftop WET Deck were instantly counted amongst the glamorous mountain town’s see and be seen spots – until COVID-19 made seeing people and being seen become a very complicated matter. But the hotel has just cleverly addressed the matter of problematic indoor dining, by this week installing “Geo Domes” at both the aforementioned spaces. (Images were unfortunately not available at press time.)

Measuring 16 feet wide x 11.9 feet tall, the domes are insulated and heated. And this being comely Aspen, each has a 12-foot bay window for taking in those breathtakingly snowy views. Exec Chef Jackie Saio has also prepared special lunch and dinner menus for the pop-ups, so one might indulge in the likes of striped bass ceviche, crispy banana egg rolls, and the very on trend uni on toast.

But for those who prefer epicurean options with maximum social distancing possibilities, the hotel’s popular Townie food truck will also be operating all season.

Still and all, regarding anyone for whom getting to Colorado is just not going to be in the cards this season, the W Aspen and its temporarily shuttered 39 Degrees lounge were kind enough to gift us with a pair of exclusive cocktail recipes, to make your stay-at-home holiday just a little more merry, bright…and decadent.
