Openings: The Standard Ibiza Ups the Game for Balearic Boutique Hotels

Despite last year’s restart, then hard stop in terms of returning to our normal(ish) nighttime lives, it seems in 2022 it’s finally safe to assume that summer will actually be happening once again this year. And if there is one party that seriously needs to get restarted, its the one that takes place annually during high season on the beautiful Balearic island of Ibiza.

Of course, very few can get a party going quite like the good people of Standard Hotels. And their newest international property has just opened there along the Carrer de Bartomeu in the atmospheric Old Town, just steps from the Port D’Eivissa. Not surprisingly, they have self-described it as “a year-round adult playground” – so they’re apparently promising that the off-season won’t bring any ratcheting down of the action at their address.

A stylistic triumph, it’s a collaboration between interior designer Lázaro Rosa-Violán of Contemporain Studio and the in-house Standard design team. It’s also a boutique hotel not just in vibe but in size as well, with just 53 rooms and suites, as well as the Casa Privada private residence down the road. The attractive sleeping chambers have a low-key, almost 70’s retro vibe, with lots of soft white, and striking contrasts of dark and light woods.

Privada, located just a block away from the main hotel, is pitched as “a haven to escape scandal, or create it.” (Or, if you’re particularly deft, perhaps both at the same time?) It has 14 rooms spread over five floors, so it’s perfect for traveling orchestras and fashionable family reunions, provided everyone gets on smashingly. It boasts a pair of terraced suites, and for the ultimate in discretion, its own private rooftop pool.

Back at the main hotel, the Jara restaurant – named for a flowering Mediterranean plant – has a cool, plant-filled-cafe vibe by day, and by evening becomes more of a mod brasserie, serving contemporary classics like garlic prawns w/ smoked paprika, Jamón Ibérico w/ tomato and crystal bread, and charcoal octopus w/ roasted sweet potato and smoked paprika syrup. (Yum.)

But the very aptly named Up is where the Ibiza scenemakers will surely be whiling away the high (and apparently also low) season this year. And how could they not, with its sprawling, very verdant terrace, and instantly Instagrammable views of the Castle of Ibiza? They’ll be snacking on short rib tacos and patatas bravas by day, then grooving to top DJ talent and sipping specialty cocktails like the Ibizan Sunrise and Jalisco Mule into the wee hours.

With the Standard having been galvanizing the party people since debuting in Hollywood all the way back in 1998, it was pretty much inevitable that the brand would eventually wind its way over to Ibiza. But with twenty-four years of refining their hospitality craft, its new Balearic “flagship” is actually a hotel for a more cultivated traveler, those for whom 11am bedtimes are but a blurry memory from less responsible times. We’ll see you on the roof.
