Openings: New Four Seasons Hotels in Madrid + San Francisco

 

 

 

For those who for whom travel is a veritable way of life (or perhaps just necessary to their business dealings), it’s a perfectly reasonable pastime now to mentally drift off and imagine when this horrible pandemic might at last be behind us, and to start planning trips that we may or may not actually take. Just for fun.

Of course, great new hotels tend to hyper-shift us into just such a fantastical state of mind, as we picture once again dropping our bags and throwing open the sumptuous curtains onto some awe-inspiring cityscape. And Spain’s comely capital being a particular favorite of ours, we were quite excited for the news of the recent opening of the pithily named Four Seasons Hotel Madrid. Fitted within the spectacular Palace of La Equitativa, dating to 1891, it was previously the headquarters of Banesto Bank until 2004, but had sat essentially abandoned until 2012, when it was declared a cultural heritage monument. In 2013, developers Obrascón Huarte Lain began converting it to the extravagant hotel that it is today.

 

 

It being a Four Seasons, it now holds the title of not just the most expensive hotel in the city, but also the biggest, with 239 generously proportioned rooms and suites—and virtually all of those other luxurious goodies that come with a European five star distinction.

Of those rooms, the Deluxe Alcala is a surely a standout, with up to 538 square feet of space, elegantly subdued color schemes and detailing, and a luxurious chaise lounge in the corner from which to take in the majestic view through floor-to-ceiling, factory style windows (the hotel is located right along the Calle de Sevilla, near the Puerta Del Sol, so there is much—mostly baroque—to admire architecturally). Suites verge on the breathtaking, some fitted with terraces…and the specialty Royal and Presidential accommodations come in at 3000+ and 4000+ square feet, respectively.

 

 

It’s all done up in a striking mix of the contemporary and classic—something the Four Seasons has been known to pull off with matter-of-fact panache.

Of course, as hotels come back, so too shall restaurants. And for this property they went straight to the top of Madrid’s culinary pecking order, enlisting three-Michelin-starred celebrity chef Dani Garcia to head up his namesake (minus the Garcia) rooftop restaurant—though specific menu and decor details are yet under lock and key. Still, you can be assured it will be worth it for the view alone.

Back downstairs, and confronting the new reality of reduced indoor table availability, El Patio offers outdoor seating off the lobby lounge, for local tapas and pintxos. Oh, and there’s a spa…and yes, it’s also the largest one in Madrid.

 

 

Also Open: Four Seasons Hotel San Francisco at Embarcadero

Despite the worrying situation in Southern California, San Francisco has not fared nearly as badly during the coronavirus crisis. And with EU travel restrictions still in place, the Bay Area becomes an even more appealing weekend destination, for those Americans who just can’t bear being cooped up at home any longer.

And as the name suggests, the new Four Seasons hotel opening this month there is bay adjacent, perched as it is dramatically above the Embarcadero—meaning views everywhere you look. We suggest booking a Deluxe Bay View Room, or a 1000 square feet Golden Gate View Suite, to enjoy the most awe-inspiring of those vistas.
