There’s a whole calendar of made-up national holidays, especially those that are dictated by the cravings and rumblings of our stomachs. Since today is National Burger Day, you should definitely eat a burger before daybreak tomorrow. And not just any burger, but the best the city has to offer. Here’s the BlackBook guide to the best burgers in NYC.
Shake Shack – The story of Shake Shack is the restaurant version of the American Dream. Since it started as a hotdog cart in Madison Square Park, the fast casual chain has expanded from locations around New York to outposts across the country, the newest one opening in remastered luxury hotel Chicago Athletic Association today. Its popularity can be traced back to one thing: the ShackBurger consistently delivers juicy goodness.
The Spotted Pig – April Bloomfield makes one heck of a burger at her West Village gastropub. Your mouth will salivate and arteries will clog just thinking about the chargrilled patty topped with gooey roquefort cheese and served alongside a pile of shoestring fries. Oh man.
Corner Bistro – Have you ever seen that episode of How I Met Your Mother where Marshall embarks on a quest to find a to-die-for burger he ate 8 years ago? If you haven’t, you should watch it today. If you have, you know how hunger-inducing that episode is. While the burger joints he goes to remains unnamed, in reality one of them is legendary Greenwich Village spot the Corner Bistro. The Bistro Burger comes with American cheese and crispy bacon, and if you aren’t a Manhattanite, head over to the spot’s Long Island City location.
Burger Joint – It’s slightly ironic that Le Parker Meridien has a seemingly casual burger joint on its premises, but that’s part of the allure of the hidden, cash-only burger counter in the Midtown luxury hotel (and at the Greenwich Village location). The straightforward menu has everything you need for National Burger Day — 5 hamburger varieties, french fries, and a pickle option.
Burger & Lobster – This British chain opened its first NYC location in the Flatiron a couple months ago with a mission: to specialize in (and reinvent) our notion of surf and turf. The three-item menu serves up burgers, lobster rolls, and beer. Perfect for summer.
