Jardin Escondido: Live in Francis Ford Coppola’s Crib

You’ve seen his films, you may have drunk his wines, and now you can live in the man’s house — if you’re down in Buenos Aires, at least. Godfather great Francis Ford Coppola, who has a thriving hospitality business that includes properties in Italy, Guatemala, Belize, and San Francisco to go along with his filmmaking hobby, recently moved out of his plush residence in the Palermo Soho neighborhood of Buenos Aires, following completion of his film Tetro (due out later this year). Jardin Escondido, which means “hidden garden,” doubled as his production base while shooting the autobiographical flick, and it’s now available for rental.

First guests to crash at Casa Coppola were Mr. and Mrs. Willem Defoe, who were down in BA for a month scouting out some film-related projects of their own. The refurbished house has multiple bedrooms, lots of nooks, terraces, gardens, balconies, pieces from Coppola’s art collection, several of his books, a little heated pool and, of course, an Argentine parrilla (grill), which we’re told Francis Ford broke out on many an occasion with the help of a local asador.

Three permanent staff members make your stay run like clockwork: a maid to keep the spot clean and cook you breakfast (complimentary), a concierge to hook up any whim you may have, and the lovely Luciana Olmedo-Wehitt, a young Argentine who worked on Coppola’s latest flick and has stayed on to oversee management of the property, functioning as an in-house jack-of-all trades. When we visited, for example, she gave us a little tour of the property, then delivered a sharp, hour-long lecture on the contemporary Buenos Aires art scene — something you definitely won’t get at a lesser Hollywood director’s South American house.
