Holiday Gifting: Apotheke Launches a Cocktail Scented Candle Line

Considering the longevity of the 21st Century cocktail craze (let’s safely predict that it’s now a permanent feature of the more cosmopolitan end of the restaurant and bar biz), it’s a bit surprising that it hasn’t developed a significant sideline in licensed products. After all, the Saint Germain French Spritz is just waiting to become a high-end perfume, is it not?

But for those – like us – for whom scent is an essential element of how we move through life, Apotheke has just come up with an idea whose time has most definitely come: cocktail scented candles. Now, while quarantine and WFH certainly inspired a spike in daytime boozing – we came to appreciate our occasional 11am Negroni – practical concerns should probably ultimately win out. However, we are truly and genuinely in favor of starting our day with the aroma of our preferred evening tipple wafting through our workspace.

The Brooklyn based luxury fragrance purveyor smartly went straight to the source, tapping the drinks menus of two of New York’s most high-profile nightlife destinations, as well as that of a super hot Australian newcomer – all three of which tellingly made the most recent list of the World’s Best Bars.

Notably, Sydney’s Maybe Sammy opened in 2019 and quickly became the city’s go to spot for creative mixology – only to have coronavirus crisis put the brakes on its ascent. But its Espresso Martini remains one of its cocktail highlights – and its notes of vanilla, vodka, cedarwood and vetiver, along with a buzzy musk courtesy of Mr Black Cold Brew Coffee Liqueur (which also happens to be roasted and distilled in Australia) makes for a truly elegant scent.

Back in NYC, the Lower East Side’s Attaboy – which rose from the ashes of the legendary Milk & Honey in 2013 – regularly serves up its Penicillin to patrons “infected” by the stresses of everyday life. And now that cure also comes in candle form, with some of our favorite scent notes, including bergamot, bitter orange, and smoked woods, combined with cognac, lemon blossom, bourbon, musk and vanilla. It’s redolent of all the wonderful things that make autumn and winter our absolute favorite seasons.

About thirty blocks north of there, New York’s NoMad Hotel has been such a hit these last nine years, that it’s practically come to define its “invented” namesake New York neighborhood – especially its lavishly decorated namesake bar. With a food and beverage program overseen by Daniel Humm of Eleven Madison Park, its cleverly named, Absolut Elyx based Nod to Nothing has long been its signature drink, the sort that cocktail fanatics would actually travel long distances to experience. Its corresponding candle also begins with a base of bergamot, but more subtle notes of almond, thyme, green leaves, earl grey tea, rose, chamomile, vanilla, and musk make it well-suited for moments of soothing calm after long and stressful days – of which there seemed to have been far too many in 2021.

During those long months of lockdowns, one of the things we truly missed most was the completing of the last call of the day and immediately thereafter ordering up an expertly made drink at one of our favorite cocktail hotspots. What Apotheke has done with this ingeniously conceived new Cocktail Candle Collection is to allow us to evoke that experience at any time of the day. And at just $28 each, obviously the perfect stocking stuffer for all your most epicurean friends.


Maybe Sammy’s Espresso Martini (using Mr Black Coffee Liqueur)

  • 2 oz Mr Black Coffee Liqueur
  • 1 oz Espresso
  • Method: Combine ingredients in the shaker with ice. Strain into coupette.

The NoMad Bar’s Nod to Nothing (using Absolut Elyx)

  • 5 sage leaves
  • 3 dashes Yuzu
  • .25 oz Marie Brizard Apry
  • .5 oz Jasmine Pearl tea Syrup
  • .75 oz Lemon Juice
  • .75 oz Lillet Blanc
  • 1.5 oz Absolut Elyx
  • Method: Whip all ingredients together, pour into a large rocks glass filled with crushed ice. Garnish with a lemon wheel.

Attaboy’s Penicillin

  • 2 oz Scotch
  • .75 oz Lemon Juice
  • .375 oz Honey Syrup
  • .375 oz Sweetened Ginger Juice
  • .25 oz Islay Scotch 
  • Method: Add all ingredients together (except the Islay Scotch) to shaker. Fill with ice. Shake vigorously. Strain into glass. Float the Islay Scotch.
