Forget Switzerland (For Now) – THE WELL at the Mayflower Inn is the Posh New Destinaton Spa

Can we all be perfectly honest for a minute? We’re doing the best we can with our “self-care” routines, but let’s just admit that sheet mask facials and doing mani-pedis from the same place we take Zoom conference calls doesn’t actually feel like a spa experience. Mercifully, while we won’t be jetting off to Switzerland or Thailand for a complete (and exotic) overhaul anytime soon, there is hope on the horizon – and it’s only two hours away from NYC, in the bucolic rolling hills of Connecticut (Litchfield Hills, to be specific.)

Indeed, New York City-based health and wellness lifestyle brand The Well has just partnered with the super posh (and 2019 Conde Nast Traveller Reader’s Choice award-winning) Mayflower Inn & Spa in Washington, CT (part of Auberge Resorts), to create a 20,000 square-foot medi-spa destination, that is surely as plush as any they’ve got in all those swish Swiss mountain towns that start with “Bad.”

Just opened in early December, it blends Eastern and Western health and wellness philosophies with high-tech amenities, including an infrared sauna and cryotherapy chamber, traditional hammam, yoga, meditation, and aromatherapy. And, if that bunch of eucalyptus twigs hanging in your shower has lost its appeal, designers Nina Gotleib and Luz LeStrange (also known as the brand’s resident, um, plant whisperer) have created an oasis where you can soak in a biophilic thermal pool surrounded by more than 400 ferns and tropical plants. And surely that is precisely what we all need after nine months of therapy at the bottom of a wine bottle.

Programming at The Well changes weekly to include a variety of interactive experiences, such as daytime and nighttime forest bathing, dharma talks, a chef series, and gong baths (really, that’s a thing). Guests are invited to create their own itinerary or choose from their expertly prepped wellness programs and packages.

Naturally, the spa’s first special wellness offering, Release & Reset 2020 New Year’s Experience, is designed to set the stresses and anxieties of this year behind, and move you intentionally into the New Year.

Although it includes those much-needed spa treatments, this specific retreat is really the perfect antidote to Anderson Cooper and friends’ Times Square ball-dropping routine – where on can indulge that aforementioned midnight gong bath, let go of the year that was (or wasn’t, depending on how you look at it) with a karma-cleansing burning bowl ritual, and welcome 2021 with healing energy during a Reiki intention circle.

Take that, 2020.
