Five Tips For a Very Pink Inauguration Day Celebration

Finally, after four torturous years of Trump, toxic masculinity and, well…treason, we’re at last seeing the first blush of a brand new day. To be sure, along with welcoming a new President who actually loves and respects his wife, the most diverse cabinet in history, and knowing that Democrats now control both houses, we’ll get to witness the game-changing swearing in of Kamala Harris as the (very-long-overdue) first woman, Black and Asian-American Vice President.
The future is looking “rosy,” indeed.
Now, while we love a good shaken, not stirred martini, cocktails are just so much prettier when they’re pink. And courtesy of Salcombe Distilling Co – from the South Devon, UK town of the same name – comes the truly exquisite Rosé Sainte Marie, an all-natural pink gin. Delicate and delightfully fresh, its character comes from notes of lemon peel and Provençal herbs, and is complemented by the natural sweetness of red fruit, orange blossom, and lemon verbena, with just a hint of white pepper for subtleness. While it might not occur to you to drink gin neat, Rosé Sainte Marie can very much be poured over ice and sipped, or more classically paired with a premium tonic water (a PG&T?). Garnish with a strawberry to accentuate the bouquet of red fruit, or with a twist of fresh lemon peel to bring the citrus notes to the forefront.
But if mixing up cocktails just feels like all too much after another day of soul-crushing Zoom meetings, we totally understand. Thankfully, Brooklyn-based Social Hour (founded by mixology mavens Julie Reiner and Tom Macy of BKNY’s Clover Club) have a new line of canned craft cocktails that make epicurean imbibing easy. The brand’s prettily pink Pacific Spritz tastes like California optimism in a can – made with a lightly bittersweet aperitivo and a rosé wine blend sourced from the Finger Lakes in Upstate New York. It’s bright and refreshing without the syrupy sweetness of many pre-made cocktails; plus, the brightly illustrated packaging is ever-so-Instagram worthy.
But this Inauguration Day definitely feels worthy of a cork-popping moment; and the woman-owned Champagne and sparkling wine brand Une Femme has just the thing. The Callie, a sparkling rosé wine, is bursting with juicy notes of ripe strawberry and rose petal on the nose, and warm, freshly plucked blackberries in the glass. Founder Jen Pelka partnered with Samantha Sheehan of POE Wines in Napa to create the truly festive Callie; and considering our outgoing president’s antagonism towards environmental preservation, the fact that the non-profit TreeSisters – who are restoring forests in fire-ravaged parts of California wine country – will plant a tree for every bottle sold just makes it taste so much sweeter.
However, if you’re yet detoxing from a toxic 2020, you can still pop some pink into Inauguration Day by pouring a Spindrift Grapefruit Sparkling Water, paired with a tasty strawberry s’mores kit from the charmingly named Hudson Valley Marshmallow Co. Their deliciously handcrafted treats are cholesterol/gluten/dairy/GMO-free (and low in fat and sodium), making them perfect for hosting a family-friendly (socially distanced, naturally) fire-pit celebration. Or just indulge solo whilst basking in the knowledge that sweeter, pinker days are surely ahead.
Oh, and we’ve even created the perfectly “pretty in pink” playlist for the big day.
Godspeed, Kamala + Joe.
