Your Next Fall Weekend Getaway: Quebec City

It’s been another fabulous summer, sneaking out of work early Friday to head out to Montauk or Big Sur, ordering up that extra bottle of rosé, and hitting the music festivals. But while it’s not quite time to think about those Thanksgiving dinner invites yet, it is definitely time to start planning a different sort of weekend getaway. To wit, the absolutely gorgeous Quebec City.

A barely-long-enough-for-a-cocktail flight from NYC will have you saying “croque-monsieur” for lunch; and, well, there’s nothing quite like that Canadian hospitality. We hit the recent Festival d’été de Québec (arriving a day after the Stones played – no, we’re not bitter at all) to scope out the best of the city.

The Hilton Quebec is a sleek monolith with breathtaking views (especially at night) from its artfully designed rooms and from its stylish 23rd floor Le23 restaurant. Megadeth were also staying there.

A short stroll from the Hilton takes you to Avenue Cartier, a lively but quaint boulevard of hip galleries, cafes, and restaurants.

If the call of the great outdoors still lingers, the Canyon Sainte-Anne offers semi-rugged hiking and zip-lining amidst gorgeous waterfalls, and is a quick 30 minutes from the city.

Retreat to the ultra chic Auberge Saint-Antoine hotel for a gastronomic lunch at Panache.  Eggplant donuts? Fried lamb sweetbreads? Oui.

While Quebec’s World Heritage site, wall enclosed Old City is the area’s top draw, for a feel of how the locals groove, head to the newly hip Saint-Roch district in the north end of town. Check out the Galerie Factory for contemporary art up-and-comers, and hit Boudoir for cocktails and trendy pizzas.

Make sure to make time for a visit to Monastere des Augustines in the old city, an ancient monastery newly restored as a stylish wellness center, hotel, and sanctuary.

Le Graffiti is a classy spot for creative French and Italian, with a top notch wine list.
