Tony the Tiger Stars in Moschino Chinese New Year Collection
We certainly do love our cartoon tigers. There’s the gloriously goofy Tigger, the philosophical Hobbes, the faithful Rajah from Aladdin. But surely the most beloved of them all is Tony the Tiger, who has been extremely enthusiastically hawking Kellogg’s Frosted Flakes since 1952. (For the record, they’re still…“GREAT!”)
Now at a very youthful 70 years of age, he’s having a go at being a fashion star. Indeed, for its 2022 Chinese New Year collection, Moschino have put the handsome cat front and center. It’s hardly a surprise, considering the success of the Milan fashion house’s spring 2021 Sesame Street collab; and Creative Director Jeremy Scott has regularly and earnestly touted the influence of his childhood on the work of his grownup self.
There were sixteen pieces in total designed for the collection, in graphic silkscreen prints and embroidery, and including athletic short sets, cotton jersey dresses, fitted and oversized t-shirts, and a particularly attractive hooded dress – with Tony even donning the signature Moschino logo gold chain. But our favorites are most definitely the boldly tiger-striped shorts and denim jacket, which represent just the sort of audacious, alluringly feline statement we feel like making right now after so many months of being cooped up and dressing down.
The accompanying campaign film finds models rollicking inside a giant box of Frosted Flakes, and just generally having more fun than we can remember having since the first lockdowns went into effect in March of 2020.
Of course, 2022 is the Year of the Tiger, which actually begins on February 1. And traditionally, the tiger represents courage and strength in the face of adversity – so the timing could surely not be better, considering the latest and significant coronavirus surge. Though curiously, since Tony was born in ’52, he arrived into this world during the Year of the Dragon.
