The Dior Spring/Summer RTW 2022 Campaign Film is a Riot of ‘Pop’ Color

We admit it, we’re just done. We don’t want to hear any more ominous reports about Omicron; we don’t want any more images of blizzards sweeping forbiddingly across the country; and, sorry, but we just cannot watch another episode of Squid Game or The Handmaid’s Tale. We need joy…and we want color!
Dior Creative Director Maria Grazia Chiuri has actually been quite good at reading our moods, as with her Fall 2022 collection, which honored the strong women in founder Christian’s life, just when we needed to feel a sense of female solidarity athwart the recent assaults on women’s rights – and then again with the Autumn-Winter ’21/’22 campaign film, which offered a dreamlike escape when we had absolutely had enough of our cold, hard COVID reality. And now she’s gone and wondrously brightened up our dark winter days, with the electrically colorful new Spring-Summer ’22 RTW campaign film.
It’s actually the continuation of a collab with 85-year-old Italian artist Anna Papparatti (a ’60s counterculture icon in Italy), who last fall created a human sized board game set for the house’s Spring-Summer ’22 collection show at the Jardin des Tuileries in Paris. Her ultra-popping “Pop” use of color is once again employed for the hyper-sensory, quasi-futuristic campaign film for S/S. Set to Daft Punk’s eternally infectious ‘Around the World’, it looks a bit like we’ve all been suddenly transported to a 23rd Century virtual dance party / aerobics class, where everyone just happens to have the good taste to have shown up in full Dior.
The clothes perfectly match Paparatti’s aesthetic, a Swinging ’60s London mix of mini-skirted suits, mustard colored coat dresses, and lots of nearly dayglo-bright greens, yellows and oranges. It’s all electrifyingly captured by Italian art/fashion photographer Brigitte Niedermair, whose book Photographie: Christian Dior by Brigitte Niedermair is due to be released via Rizzoli this April 12.
So yes, fashion continues to save the day, a full two years into this soul crushing pandemic. And when it’s all over, we’re pretty sure you can find us at wherever the Dior party is going to be.
