‘Sweepin’ the Clouds Away’: Moschino Launches Sesame Street Collection w/ Kacey Musgraves

When Sesame Street turned 50 in 2019, it was a keen reminder of just how much the greatest kids’ show ever had woven itself into the fabric of our lives. And having so thoroughly colored our pop cultural landscape for five decades running (and helped us have fun with vampires while learning our ABC’s), pretty much all that was really left was for Ernie, Bert, Oscar and Elmo at this point was to have their ultimate high fashion moment – which has at last been accomplished with the groovy new Sesame Street Collection by Moschino, which arrived in stores this week, and is also available at Moschino.com.

Fittingly, one of the people whose life was so enriched by the enduring values of Sesame Street – love, acceptance, egalitarianism – was Jeremy Scott, Creative Director of the Italian fashion house who, now 45 years of age, grew up watching the show in its late ’70s heyday. And his designs treat the beloved characters with all the reverence they deserve, presenting them essentially as we’ve all come to know and love them – with those endearingly familiar big smiles – rather than trying to camp them up for fashion’s sake. Though it must be said that Big Bird is looking kinda badass in a classic Moschino biker jacket…and Ernie’s pink tracksuit is certainly a statement.

Another longtime Sesame Street fan is Kacey Musgraves, who appears in the campaign for the new line. And rather than the ‘Dime Store Cowgirl’ singer playing it cutesy, she seriously vamps it up – Cleopatra bangs and all – posing suggestively atop giant alphabet blocks, and chomping decadently on a cookie so big it looks like a chocolate chip pizza. We especially love her in the all black hoodie, adorned with a grouchy looking Oscar the Grouch, who himself is decked in a signature Moschino chain necklace, and popping out of his garbage can as he always does.

It’s all so cleverly executed, that we’re guessing designer Scott took inspiration from Elmo’s uncomplicated brand of wisdom, and his memorable quote, “It’s incredible where you can go with your imagination.” And so, yes, spring 2021 wardrobes will find the Sesame Street gang on Moschino knitted cardigans, cropped denim vests, hooded windbreakers, tees, sneakers, comfy looking sweats and nylon accessories. After fifteen dreary months of staying in and dressing down, we couldn’t think of a more delightful way to finally get to stepping out again.
