New Film Short Goes Backstage at the Messika x Kate Moss Paris Fashion Week Presentation

It’s important to make the point that Valérie Messika founded her namesake Paris maison in 2005, back when, despite assorted debacles in the Middle East, the Western World was still brimming with hope and confidence of a sort that suggested it was a great time to launch a new high-end jewelry line. As we all now know, the 21st Century then went decidedly awry, leaving the EU in a veritable shambles, and the United States divided in hate.

But in such times as these, we simply send up the Kate Signal, and our all-time fave supermodel/hero Kate Moss simply shows up once again with something fabulous for us to marvel at. Most recently, it was she joining Jennifer Lopez for the 80th anniversary Coach campaign. Of course, Kate has always been known to be a brilliant accessorizer, even when she’s trudging through the mud at Glastonbury – though we must say that her new collab with Messika is most definitely not intended for adventures at insalubrious music festivals.

First introduced in 2020, at this year’s Paris Fashion Week the second Messika x Kate Moss collection premiered to not insignificant enthusiasm. Yet unlike the offerings of so many of the super luxe jewelry houses (Bulgari, Cartier, etc), it’s all much more stylistically subtle and seductively bohemian than it is glittery and showy – especially the striking gold and diamond headpieces.

An exhilarating new short film brings together the runway and backstage images from The Ritz hotel (which, if you missed it, reopened in 2016 after a $450 million renovation), where the presentation took place. Models Taylor Hill, Cindy Bruna, Isabeli Fontana, Constance Jablonski and Edita Vilkevičiūtė are all seen traversing the catwalk adorned with pieces from the Messika x Kate Moss line, interspersed with scenes of makeup artists and stylists prepping them for the show. It almost feels like it could be a scene out of Robert Altman’s cheeky 1994 celluloid fashion satire Prêt-à-Porter.

Not that Messika really needed star power. Indeed, before this new collab the brand had already been worn by a wide swath of the A++-list, including Charlize Theron, Beyonce, Anne Hathaway and Emily Ratajkowski. But Ms. Moss has brought her singular aesthetic to this unexpected partnership – and considering the perpetual anxieties of the last nineteen months, we really do need a bit of Kate dazzle more than ever.
