Moschino’s Pre-Fall 2022 Collection is the Psychedelic Exuberance We Need Right Now

We seriously just can’t get enough of Moschino these days, from their adorable Sesame Street collab earlier this year (with Kacey Musgraves modeling), to the Karen Elson starring mini musical Lightning Strikes, to the recent and very, very fabulous eyewear campaign with Drag Race superstars Gigi Goode and Symone. We’re guessing Creative Director Jeremy Scott is having just as much fun as we are (okay, probably even a lot more), as he continues to reinvent the exalted Italian fashion house for the 21st Century, by employing just the right amount of nostalgic inspiration.

And for his utterly eye-popping Pre-Fall 2022 collection, he taps the most over the top bits of the ’60s, ’70s and ’80s to truly dazzling effect. Indeed, literally only he could have made such clothes that effortlessly and flamboyantly make reference to The Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper, as well as A Clockwork Orange (those hats are unmistakable), possibly Adam & The Ants, and most definitely the late, legendary performance artist Leigh Bowery.

A bit more obscurely, the influences of British Pop artist Allen Jones, German painter and Beatles fave Richard Lindner, and the French-Hungarian father of Op-Art Victor Vasarely all make their way into the psychedelic-sci-fi-exuberance-meets-militaristic-pomp that is Scott’s new collection. Photographer Marcus Mam was back for the shoot, which pretty much just let the clothes speak for themselves. (What else could one do?) As does the accompanying short film, with models – Ariel Nicholson, Chloe Oh, Cici Tamez, Claire Delozier, Cynthia Arrebola, Kate McNamara, Krini Hernandez – simply popping in and out of the frame to a musical backdrop of dramatically racing strings, and each likely assuming themselves to bit just a bit more fantabulous than the other.

After living through the greyness that hung over us through so many months of pandemic-imposed lockdowns, the Moschino Pre-Fall 2022 collection is actually just the splash of wild color we need to lift us back up. And as for those gorgeous, statement making double breasted dresses, well – we probably wouldn’t mind if we found one in our stocking this year. Hint hint.
