Images: Saint Laurent Pre-Fall 2021 Collection Nods to Classic YSL Hallmarks

When we last heard from Saint Laurent, they’d enlisted filmic provocateur Jim Jarmusch to direct Chloë Sevigny, Julianne Moore and Charlotte Gainsbourg for the Spring 2021 collection film French Water – which ends up with one amusingly calling another a “French bitch.” Perhaps realizing there was simply no topping that, for Pre-Fall 2021, they’re simply letting the clothes speak entirely for themselves.

Notably, the shoot for the collection was used as an opportunity to at last show off the spectacular new YSL Paris headquarters, at 37 Rue de Bellechasse in the posh 7th arrondissement. The 18th Century former Abbey of Penthemont – and later the HQ of the French Ministry of Defence – it was inaugurated into the world of fashion in January of 2019, and so had just a year of life before shutting down for coronavirus quarantine conditions. So by now it was obviously very much ready for its close-up – and indeed, models were captured by Brit photographer Rory Van Millingen in the midst of the architecturally imposing courtyard. (And really, who doesn’t love a Neo-Classical photo backdrop?)

And for his latest collection, Creative Director Anthony Vaccarello has revisited and revived so many of the most revered Saint Laurent hallmarks, with aesthetic and ideological nods to the 1960s, ’70s and ’80s. A stripey turtleneck is done up in retro cool colors, very shiny leather trousers have a luxe rocker vibe, an enigmatically patterned mini-dress seems both Swinging ’60s and neo-Tudoresque at once, and an androgynous trenchcoat is slightly new wave in that “long coat, grey hat, smoking a cigarette” sort of way. But a beautifully cut tweed jacket is as elegantly trad as anything you might expect from the house.

These are definitely styles meant to make the Saint Laurent woman access her inner sartorial confidence, cool and sexy, but decidedly unfussy – the sort of clothes you wear, rather than those clothes that wear you. And considering we weren’t allowed to go out and play for at least sixteen months, Vaccarello has delivered a collection that is certainly signaling a playfully chic autumn ahead. And honestly, isn’t that exactly what we need right now?
