Images: Proenza Schouler Spring/Summer 2021 Collection is an Homage to NYC

We miss those heady post-Millennium days in New York City, when fashion still seemed like something other than an accounting-department-run undertaking. Co-Designers/Founders Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez, in particular, made sure their 2002-launched label Proenza Schouler was on the lips (and bodies) of anyone who would be considered to be anyone in the business of style back then.

Now social media and soulless globalization have bludgeoned all the insidery fun out of fashion. But amazingly, McCollough and Hernandez managed in 2018 to completely buy back the company from assorted investors. And their new Spring/Summer 2021 RTW collection is a tribute to the very city that fostered their rise to fashionable fame.

Photographed by Daniel Shea, the collection book follows the Proenza Schouler woman from morning through night, capturing the city’s energy and reflecting its vibrancy. Highlights are a striking Mint Rib Knit Collared Cardigan, a body-hugging Poppy Matte Jersey Gathered Dress, an attention grabbing Bronze Knit / Gauze Combo Draped Dress, an elegant Bronze Bonded Cotton Gabardine Trench Coat (for those chilly early April evenings), and an almost architectural Black Crepe Cut Out Dress, for those glamorous nights out that we hope to be having again by the onset of spring.

The collection/book also viscerally draws on the shared sense of deprivation brought on by a global pandemic that nearly brought Gotham to its knees earlier this year.

“During the early days of our collective, deliberate isolation,” McCollough observes, “the world seemed to be moving towards an almost purely digital, and therefore ephemeral, existence. We were deprived of the material world and [now] long for touch, for feel, for the nuance and delicacy of the tactile world…for the feeling and physicality of objects and things.”

Hernandez finishes, “This book is a product of these feelings: a physical and lasting material document of an extraordinary moment in time, and of a collection that came to be under such unimaginable circumstances.”

The book is available in four colors—Imperial Blue, Savannah Brown, Savannah Red, Ecru—and copies will be sold exclusively through ProenzaSchouler.com, and at the Soho, NYC boutique at 121 Greene Street.
