Images: Jeremy Scott Goes ‘Jungle Red’ for Moschino Fall/Winter 2021 Collection
Considering that all the movie biz seems to be able to turn out these days are superhero flicks (enough already) and bland, highly unnecessary sequels, a little visual revisit to the Golden Age of Old Hollywood is just what we need lift us up from our pandemic doldrums. And Jeremy Scott’s Fall/Winter 2021 collection for Moschino has enough glitz and glamour to almost make us forget that we haven’t gotten dressed up to go out in nearly a year.
The presentation was appropriately cinematic, and purposefully meta in its conceptualization (a film within a film within a film, of sorts). A specific influence was George Cukor’s groundbreaking 1939 classic The Women, in which the character Sylvia Fowler enthuses about the latest nail hot color, Jungle Red. Five almost fantastical vignettes were constructed, taking the cast of models from the city streets to rolling hills and on to, of course, the jungle.
The vividly realized backdrops are matched by the audacity of the fashions themselves, with wild animal references from faux gold croc to sequined giraffe dresses and, well, a flamingo-adorned black mini. Elsewhere there are black hearts on a daring, body-hugging red gown, a new-wavey zip-front black dress, and some rather provocative prints.
Though the spring and summer ahead are still uncertain, it must be said that the Moschino Fall/Winter 2021 collection represents exactly the sort of intrepid, exhilaratingly resplendent fashions we very much look forward to stepping out in this autumn, once we have at last emerged from this terribly drawn out coronavirus crisis. We’ll be in the flamingo dress.
