The Latest H&M Designer Collaboration Rumor: Lanvin’s Alber Elbaz
Just as the rumor mill really began to churn over H&M’s next celebrity designer collaboration—Tomas Maier of Bottega Venetta and Carolina Herrera being the favored objects of speculation—word comes that it’s in fact Lanvin that’s teaming up the fashion juggernaut. “According to market sources, the Swedish fast-fashion giant will unveil a project with Lanvin and its creative director, Alber Elbaz, within the next week,” says Women’s Wear Daily. While the faces featured on H&M’s mysterious black and white Facebook videos threw fans into a guessing frenzy, WWD says would-be Maier and Herrera shoppers latched on to the wrong clues. “While the camera never lingers on the faces long enough for recognition in the clips, the voice-over of designer musings, while electronically altered, are unmistakable Elbaz-isms.”
For example: “Design is very important because it actually brings dream to our life.” However, some doubt remains: if comments Elbaz made to the New Yorker last year are to be believed, then it’s unlikely the revered creator is the latest partner for H&M. “I have a problem to do a collection that is a secondary line. I mean, you don’t want to be the stepsister. You want to be Cinderella. Show me one girl who wants to be the stepsister,” Jezebel highlights. So, has Elbaz (who has, it should be said, collaborated with Acne, the mid-priced brand from Stockholm) changed his tune? Or is the mystery designer someone else entirely? The only sure thing (that is, until H&M reveals all on September 9) is that this is a genius marketing endeavor.
