Sarah Palin’s Fashion Spending Spree
God bless Politico. The snappy Beltway upstart reported that potential veep Sarah Palin coughed up $150,000 on her new threads. More properly, the Republican National Committee did the coughing-up. Palin (on the GOP’s dime) dropped $75,000 at Neiman Marcus, $59,000 at Saks, and nearly $5,000 on hair and makeup (compare to Barack Obama’s fave suit, which costs $1,500). “The cash expenditures immediately raised questions among campaign finance experts about their legality under the Federal Election Commission’s long-standing advisory opinions on using campaign cash to purchase items for personal use,” reports Politico. Then it gets better.
“The campaign does not comment on strategic decisions regarding how financial resources available to the campaign are spent,” said a Palin a spokesman. Later, on her website, Stacey Schmitt said: “With all of the important issues facing the country right now, it’s remarkable that we’re spending time talking about pantsuits and blouses. It was always the intent that the clothing go to a charitable purpose after the campaign.”
