Four Blogs Where Fashion Meets Food
Fashion and food may make for unlikely bedfellows, but in recent months quite a few designers and fashion bloggers have unleashed their inner foodies on the web. From designers who moonlight as chefs, to bloggers with eclectic appetites and a penchant for taking mid-meal photos, there’s a slew of online outlets where you can find highly satisfying food content courtesy of fashion insiders. In honor of this unlikely pairing, four of the best blogs where you can simultaneously wet your appetite for FW10 collection inspiration and watch a video tutorial on how to clean octopi:
Mociun Caitlin Mociun’s newly launched blog is heavy on both recipes and instructional material (e.g. the aforementioned video tutorial). Courtesy of the Brooklyn-based designer, whose namesake line is synonymous with custom made, eye-catching prints, the Tumblr so far includes not just a stellar recipe for octopus but a guide to homemade nut milk. The last time I spoke with Caitlin she mentioned co-hosting a pickling class this summer in Brooklyn. (She also helped make a handmade collection of recipes for her and her friends.) Expect plenty more food-centric posts from Caitlin along with news of limited edition tie-dye bikini launches and transporting Vogue editorials. Check out Mociun’s Tumblr here.
Luxirare Ji, the design mastermind behind this sporadically updated site, crafts some of the most insane concoctions around…and I mean that with regard to both fashion and food. As for the latter, think molecular gastronomy in the vein of WD-50 or El Bulli, recipes for everything from Fatty Tuna hand rolls to Apple Napoleon, accompanied by exhibition-quality photos. Although infrequent—with a newly launched e-shop, Ji no doubt has an overcrowded plate—her food posts are definitely worth the wait. To see what high-fashion food porn Ji is cooking up, head here.
Snappetite The wonderful lens man Phil Oh, who founded the street style porthole Street Peeper, is another fashionisto with a food obsession. With Snappetite, Oh is applying the same approach he used with Street Peeper to food. The not-yet-launched site aims to help users collect, share, and analyze their eats. Snappetite is more user-oriented than Street Peeper, for which Oh shoots all the images, but both aim to catalog style and dishes is the same fashion. Band of Outsiders Having branched out with women’s wear, numerous collaborations, and an e-commerce site, what else was there for Band of Outsiders’ Scott Sternberg to do? Launch a cookie blog, of course. The designer is paying homage to his favorite baked good with a blog whose slogan is, ‘If you don’t like cookies, you might not have a soul.’ There are video homages to Girl Scout cookie season and dessert plate snapshots a plenty. For more cookie love than one might know what to do with, check out Sternberg’s latest posts here.
