Exuberant New Etro Holiday Campaign Exalts the Power of the Zodiac
Admit it, even if you’ve never “followed the stars,” at some point during the most anxious periods of the coronavirus crisis, you probably found yourself considering that astrology might be able to offer you a glimpse of fate. After all, whatever you need to get you through…
By now we’ve all retreated to our usual philosophical positions, regardless of whatever it is that may lay ahead in 2022. But exalted Milano fashion house Etro, which has always had a bit of the “Age of Aquarius” in its DNA (it debuted in 1968, just a year before The 5th Dimension had a hit with the song of the same name), is celebrating the mysteries and wonders of the Zodiac with a totally groovy new holiday campaign – Zodiacs Under the Sign of Etro – which surely even the most steadfast nihilist can get up and groove to.
Directed by the also Milan based Tommaso Ottomano – who has worked with Prada, Missoni, Versace and Bulgari – the action takes place in a sexy, moodily lit nightclub. Amidst a palpable anticipation, we see the host step up to the mic and then suddenly enthusiastically announce, “Ladies and gentlemen, thank you for joining us tonight under the same sky. Please, welcome our brightest star. The Queen of Zodiac is in the house: Tinaaa!”
The Tina he is referring to is Tina Kunakey, French model and burgeoning actress, who also happens to be married to indie cinema legend Vincent Cassel. She then proceeds to belt out the Roberta Kelly classic ‘Zodiacs’, with its ethereal lyrical exhortations:
“We’re all born under the sun (Under the sun)
Affected by the pull of the moon
Regis and the born of the end
It’s the zodiac, zodiac fate”
Everyone is, of course, decked out in exuberant Paisley + other dazzling Etro prints, dancing with the kind of unfettered abandon that suggests they may have been cooped up for months and months and not allowed to go out to nightclubs. The party then spills out onto the piazza out front (as it often does in Italy), with everyone sipping tea (not prosecco?) and eating extravagantly bedecked pastry. Ms. Kunakey then wraps it up by reminding us of the rarefied forces that so likely guide our existence: “Power from the planet, it’s the Zodiac. Enjoy!”
Which is just what you would think an Aries would say.
