‘Euphoria’ Star Sydney Sweeney Finds Serenity in New Miu Miu ‘Wander’ Campaign
When it comes to film and television, stark depictions of raw, unsettling reality are generally quick to wrack up detractors, as if storytelling somehow needed to be tempered to the most squeamish or easily outraged amongst us. Such is the case with HBO’s perpetually controversial Euphoria, with its unflinching depictions of sexuality and teen drug abuse.
But for all the chatter around Zendaya‘s polarizing character Rue Bennett, co-star Sydney Sweeney‘s Cassie Howard is opinion-dividing in a whole other way, being a young woman whose self-worth seems almost entirely wrapped up in her relationships with sometimes manipulative men. Though she recently told The Independent of her work on the show, “I thought it was a great performance, but no one talks about it because I got naked. This is something that has bothered me for a while. I’m very proud of my work in Euphoria.”
We can say with certainty, however, that there is nothing controversial about her appearance in the new campaign for the Miu Wander bag by Miu Miu. Indeed, throughout the thirty-eight-second short film, Sweeney (who also starred in The White Lotus) appears to be in a state of quiet contemplation, or perhaps just waking from a harmonious dream. It’s almost as if she’s trying to tell us that her new Wander handbag, which at times she’s clutching as a child would a favorite stuffed animal, has created a safe space for her to drift away from the ugly realities of life – something that fashion has been known to do for us in the past as well.
But despite the handbag’s pillowy aesthetic – as well as its convenient, shoulder-friendly handle – what we really love most about the Wander is the feeling of motion that is conveyed by its singularly beautiful design. After all, its very name is one-half of “wanderlust,” described in the dictionary as “a strong longing for or impulse toward wandering.” And after two years of on-and-off lockdowns, we can’t think of anything else we’d rather do right now – with, of course, our gorgeous new Miu Miu bag in tow.
