Etro Launches Kung Fu Panda ‘Tigress’ Chinese New Year Capsule Collection
For Kung Fu Panda fans (admit it, you’re definitely one of them), it’s been six very long years since the 2016 release of the third film – and a date for KFP4 seems to be nowhere in sight. So that those clever cultivators of cultural crossovers at Etro have released a new Chinese New Year collection based on the beloved animated series is for our part more than excitedly welcome.
Should you be yet unfamiliar, the original 2008 movie introduced the story of a clumsy panda named Po, who just happened to be a martial arts fanatic. Stuck in a life of drudgery working in a noodle shop, against all odds he trains for the big Dragon Warrior tournament – and though he is at first mocked for thinking he could achieve that coveted title, he ultimately endures. He then goes on to defeat the baddie kung fu warrior Tai Lang, thus preserving peace in the valley.
The Dreamworks series has so far grossed $1.8 billion at the box office.
The collection, however, puts the focus on the supporting – but no less formidable – character Tigress (voiced by Angelina Jolie), with 2022 being the Year of the Tiger, of course. She is one of the members of the Furious Five (sorry, not based on the Grandmaster Flash musical accomplices), who outside of Po represent the pinnacle of kung fu warrior status – and her fierce awesomeness comes through boldly on these unisex t-shirts, hoodies, sweaters, hats, handbags and other accessories. Shifu, Mantis, Crane, Monkey and obviously Po also make appearances. (All styles are available at boutiques worldwide and at Etro.com.)
We’re also sensing a pattern here that we hope will continue, with Moschino having done recent collections featuring Sesame Street and Tony the Tiger. So if anyone is listening, hint hint, we wouldn’t at all object to seeing images of Ren & Stimpy or the Powerpuff Girls on some serious designer togs. Just saying.
