Cute (Fashion) Panda Alert: Fendi Collabs w/ Oscar Wang For Adorable Lunar New Year Clip
2020 was arguably the worst year of our lives on a genuinely global scale. So the flipping of the calendar on January 1 carried with it a particular sort of resonance, with the chance to recharge our ability to feel hopeful for the near future. Five days later, a sitting American president encouraged the staging of a coup on the US Capitol on his way out…and the sense of shared trauma was decisively reinstated.
So at this point, we’ll welcome any opportunity that seems a bit like renewal. And this past Friday, February 12, came the arrival of the Lunar New Year – which is mostly celebrated in East Asia, with months based on the moon cycles. It’s also known as the “spring festival,” which sounds a lot like hope and rejuvenation, after this winter of so much discontent.
To honor the coming of the new year (the Year of the Ox, if you didn’t know), Fendi has renewed its creative collaboration with Chinese artist Oscar Wang, which began in 2019 with the FENDI x Jackson Wang capsule collection. And for their utterly captivating Lunar New Year short film, they have brought back the crazy adorable Fendidi family of animated pandas. Fendidi actually translates to “Fendi’s little brother,” and here he and his little panda brood are seen jetpacking through the clouds, before finally touching down to celebrate with fireworks while mama panda Fendiva beats joyfully on her drum.
Fendi tells us that the short is meant to deliver “blessings of happiness and joy.” So it’s just the sort of message of unfettered elation that we have experienced so little of since the global lockdowns began last March. And, frankly, we just want more of the Fendidi panda family in our lives.
By the way, those born in the Year of the Ox are said to be patient, kind, calm and trustworthy, making them ultimately loyal friends. And if there’s one thing we need more of…
