Balenciaga Creates a Fascinating VR World For Fall 2021 Collection Film
As we face the grim (virtual) reality that Big Tech is about to completely take over our lives (sorry, but yes, Alexa is listening in on your private conversations), we can grudgingly admit that certain aspects of it did help to keep us connected over sixteen months of lonely pandemic quarantine. But let’s be honest, even apps that were supposed to, um…bring people together – Tinder, Bumble – are mostly just massive international creepfests. The digital landscape, as it turns out, isn’t pretty. At all.
But the good people at Balenciaga are taking the occasion of the presentation of their Fall 2021 collection to grace us with a high-tech story that actually offers glimmers of hope and positivity. Said collection was first debuted back in January via a cloud-based video game called Afterworld: The Age of Tomorrow, in which the digital journey began at a Balenciaga retail boutique, and ended up with a rabbit leading the way to a secret rave in a mysterious forest – because, why not? And now the futuristic ramblings continue with the release of the dare-we-say heartwarming accompanying campaign film.
In it, we see two people meet via an accidental bump of the shoulders – it’s clearly infatuation at first site – in a dreary, Orwellian looking queue of some sort. It turns out they are waiting to leave behind whatever grey, ominous existence they currently occupy, in order to enter a more colorful virtual reality world. Once headsets are in place, and after navigating some curious looking characters doing some unsettlingly freaky dance moves, the two strangers reunite ethereally under a beautiful cherry blossom tree, which is showering them with shedding flowers. It doesn’t last, however, and the action quickly cuts to the pair looking out over the darkness of some or other unspecified urban cityscape…and yes, still a virtual one. Will they ever meet in real life?
Of course, we wouldn’t dream of telling you how it ends – except to say that we ourselves are planning to fall hard for anyone dressed in head-to-toe Balenciaga this autumn. And with any luck, our love will last until at least…the future.
