Alexander McQueen Debuts Striking 2021 Holiday Gifting Collection
We all need, as Edina from Absolutely Fabulous once so eloquently put it, some “Gorgeous, tasteful, little stylish little gorgeous things.” This is surely especially true right now, after so many months of just focusing on the act of merely surviving from day to day.
The exalted house of Alexander McQueen seemed to know this as well as anyone, delivering a stunning new Holiday Gifting Collection just in time for seasonal cheer to start chasing away all that overwhelming gloom. And seriously, as we continue the long climb out of this deep pandemic hole, what could be better to fill those stockings than McQueen designed charms and talismans, the latter a particularly stylish way to bring a sense of healing or to even fend off harm? And inspired as they are by flora and fauna, they literally represent life itself, at a time when so much death still looms over our everyday existence.
The collection also includes butterflies, horseshoes and hearts that are gorgeously hand carved, and set with crystals and pearls – which actually symbolize serenity and wisdom. And surely we could all use a lot more of both, as the calendar ticks over to yet another year in which COVID will still be a part of our lives.
This being McQueen, obviously, the presentation could never be anything less than fantastical. And Welsh animator Isabell Garrett – sort of a new-gen Jan Švankmajer – uses slightly sinister looking stop motion animation to take us on a journey through a mystifying forest, with eerily beautiful butterflies, beetles, spiders and snakes all flying and creeping and slithering about/around pieces from the collection, adding to the sense of the mystical with which each seems to be imbued. One snake is even seen poking mischievously through the eye of a skull, a McQueen signature which also appears on charms, rings and opulently bejeweled handbags.
So if your holiday shopping list, like ours, does indeed include “little gorgeous things,” Alexander McQueen have decisively sorted that out with this striking new collection. But please…do make sure to pick something out for yourself, as well.
