Miley Cyrus Doesn’t Butcher ‘Lilac Wine’

She’s no Jeff Buckley. But Miley Cyrus didn’t butcher Lilac Wine the way you might expect.

Miley performed the ’50s love song, famously covered by everyone from Nina Simone to Buckley, live with her band this summer in a series she called "The Backyard Sessions."  There’s something just a bit off — the key? the entire song in alto? — but she’s nevertheless proved that between this and the (much better) cover of Bob Dylan’s You’re Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go that Hannah Montana can be trusted beyond Party In The U.S.A.

And while we’re talking Jeff Buckley covers, Penn Badgeley from Gossip Girl, who is starring as Buckley in a forthcoming biopic, ain’t too shabby in his Lilac Wine cover either.
