Surf’s Up: The Best Beach Products (Even If You Don’t Surf)
Not a few of us revel in the surfer lifestyle, even if we’ve never suctioned ourselves into a wetsuit (see yesterday’s Paris Review peon to 1987’s gnarly North Shore). If you love the films, fashion, and lifestyle this most summery of sports stands for, then there’s no reason why you can’t at least dabble in the array of excellent beauty products specifically formulated for surfers. With their coconut-beach scents, for example, there’s no better protection from the sun then surfers’ sun block – it’s sun block (not just protection) that stays on the surface of the skin. But if a shell-white nose isn’t your thing, there are other ways to get you’re dose of aloha with candles, salves, and hair sprays. Here are a few recommended by the pros.
I’ve always loved surf wax for it’s smell – now it comes in candle form from Sex Wax.
Since it’s apparently okay to wear when you battle 20-foot waves, opt for shocking neon-colored sun protection from Zinka Nose Coat. It comes in nine different shades, and to quote their website, the “proven formula withstands the most extreme weather conditions performing flawlessly in wind, hot, cold and wet.” Rad.
Uber sunscreen Doc Martin’s was developed by a Maui dermatologist who was also an avid surfer. Nike team Pro surfer Monyca Byrne Wickey uses it along with Verta Sunstick for its water defiant formula.
If going out there with a neon face isn’t your idea of beach beauty, then the easiest and sexiest surf look to try is just-swam-in-the-ocean tossled hair. Bumble and Bumble Surf Spray gives an authentic ocean-swept look without having to get your feet wet. Another surf essential is Surfer’s Salve. Perfect for chapped lips, dry skin, sunburns, bug bites, and ever-present board rashes.
