Watch + Listen: Paradox Obscur’s Darkly Cathartic New Single/Video ‘Animal Reactor’

When we last heard from Paradox Obscur, it was World Goth Day 2020, and singer Kriistal Ann was enthusing that, “The dark music scene is no longer just a subculture, but has the power to inspire a wider audience, to define the trends of fashion and to create a new philosophy of things – where the qualities are more accurate in modern reality.”

She could not have been more right, of course. For as much as the dark days of the global pandemic that was just unfolding at that time certainly inspired many to retreat into escapist entertainment, the sounds and ideas emitting from the international darkwave underground certainly more accurately captured the unsettling tenor of the times.

The Athens based duo – she and partner/producer Toxic Razor – have been making philosophical, thought-provoking, neo-techno-electro music since forming in 2014. And their fifth studio album will arrive via Metropolis Records this May 6. The title immediately intrigues, as Wikipedia describes Morphogenesis as “the biological process that causes a cell, tissue or organism to develop its shape.” So, the very essence of life, apparently.

The first single, ‘Animal Reactor,’ has just been released, and it is an unflinching, club-ready stormer. indeed, the relentless beat and rat-a-tat percussion especially imbue the track with a kind of exhilarating anxiety, and Kriistal Ann’s vocal’s have an almost spectral quality, seeming both distant and urgently immediate all at once.

“The lyrics to ‘Animal Reactor’ allude in an allegorical way to the modern human existence,” she explains, “which is trapped in an endless magnifying glass of a repetitive life pattern, coexisting with the false sense of its dominance over life.”

The accompanying video finds Taiwanese director Sheng-Yang Su leading dancers Szu-Haou Cheng, Kai-Ning Chung, Wen-Yi Wu and Hsin Ho through a stark and dark, but tinsel-adorned portholed tunnel. It seems both a celebration and catharsis at once, a ritualistic dance of purging the fears and uncertainties of more than two years of fatal coronavirus crisis that we are just beginning to crawl out from under.

So…perfect timing then.
