Watch + Listen: New SHAED Single/Video ‘No Other Way’ is a Defiant Pandemic Riposte

Considering we’re two weeks away from the most harrowing (er, terrifying?) presidential election in American history, we’re just happy to be talking about something good coming out of D.C. right now. And that thing is a striking new single/video from the capital’s coolest indie-poppers, SHAED (pronounced “shade,” but spelled slightly dyslexicly).

The track itself is a gorgeously shimmering slice of new wave synth pop, vividly recalling the likes of Pet Shop Boys and Bronski Beat. And with each sonically soaring chorus, singer Chelsea Lee (who along with Max and Spencer Ernst make up the buzzy trio) defiantly intones, “I never care / What people say / I live my life no other way.” Considering we’ve all been held captive by such oppressive pandemic conditions these last several months, she could very easily be addressing those words to the virus itself.

“These past six months have been a struggle for us all,” she observes, “filled with anxiety, disappointment, and uncertainty. We wrote this song as a reminder to live in the moment, which is the only thing we can control.”

The accompanying video makes deft use of current technology to take them from a Tampa studio to desert sandstorms to a monsoon plagued jungle—perhaps poignant metaphors for the storms of stress we are all experiencing right now.

Lee steadfastly concludes, “As a trio, we’re ready to face whatever life throws our way.”

Bring it on, world.
