On Repeat: FKA twigs + Central Cee’s ‘Measure of a Man’ Wants to Bridge the Gender Divide

No matter how far we sometimes seem to have come, modern society still seems rife with bitter gender divisions and estrangements. But the poignant new single by FKA twigs and Central Cee, edifyingly titled ‘Measure of a Man’ (and which we cannot stop listening to), seems to very much want to try and bridge those divides. It comes, curiously enough, just months after Ms. twigs supposedly settled a lawsuit against former boyfriend Shia Labeouf for infliction of emotional distress during a nearly year-long, allegedly emotional abusive relationship.

But rather than dwell on the negative, the new track seeks to explore the possibility of greater understanding between the genders, with a lyrical narrative about compassion, healing and overcoming the hurt.

“Nobody feels the pain behind the love you show
Nobody feels the burden that is yours alone
If when the morning comes you’re not with me (destiny)
I know that you’ll return with destiny, Only you can truly understand
The measure of a hero is the measure of a man
(I wanna kiss it better, the measure of a man)”

No surprise ‘Measure…’ also bears a distinctly cinematic quality, musically, as it appears on the soundtrack to the upcoming British period spy flick The King’s Man (in theaters December 22 via 20th Century Studios). And the pair have made an intriguing accompanying video with director Diana Kunst which borrows some visually dazzling, and distinctly 007 style footage from the film.

FKA twigs observes, “This song has such a different sound, which is a challenge – you’ve got to really embody the song. For me especially with my vocals, I had to pull a different side of my artistry out.”

Directed by Matthew Vaughn, The King’s Man follows Ralph Fiennes‘ Duke of Oxford as he attempts to foil a plot by a group of “historical” tyrants that will leave millions dead. An all-star ensemble cast also includes Gemma Arterton, Colin Firth, Stanley Tucci and Matthew Goode – so yes, a bloody exciting holiday moviegoing experience is virtually assured.
