New Tricky EP ‘Doorway’ is Out Today – Will Tour(?) in 2021
2020 has been a year of immeasurable loss across the globe; but Bristol trip-hop godhead Tricky was already there before the calendar flipped on January 1. Indeed, his 24-year-old daughter Mazy (whose mother is Tricky’s former musical collaborator Martina-Topley Bird) died mysteriously in a mental care facility—West Park Darlington Hospital to be specific—back in May of 2019. He said following the incident that his “soul felt empty.”
But Tricky soldiered on, delivering this past September the tellingly titled album Fall To Pieces. And today his new EP Doorway is released (via False Idols), which is actually the result of a competition he staged to devise reworked versions of his recent single ‘I’m In The Doorway.’
The languid but sultry original had vocals by Danish songstress Oh Land—and that vocal is featured once again on the EP’s ‘Talking With Maxine Mix.’ But two additional remixes showcase a pair of complete unknowns (via said competition): Brazilian singer LOUISE on the ‘No More Mix’ (her hauntedly alluring vocals were recorded over the phone), and Mauritius-by-way-of -London singer Mars Blackbird on the ‘All The Way Mix,’ which takes the track in a jarringly cool, bluesy-jazz direction.
It’s yet again a showcase for Tricky’s remarkable talent for incessant reinvention and uncanny ability to surprise. One imagines it’s also a kind of creative therapy for him, considering all he has endured the last 18 months.
Amazingly, he also has a 29-date European/UK tour booked, launching in Copenhagen on February 2, and finishing up in Kiev, Ukraine on March 30. If the EU travel restrictions do get lifted in early 2021, it will be the perfect excuse to hop a flight to Berlin or Amsterdam, to catch one of the shows.
