New Single + Video by Sigur Rós’ Jónsi is a Pillar of Calm Within a Storm

The last time we heard from Jónsi (in late 2019), he had taken over the Tanya Bonakdar Gallery in Los Angeles, with a fascinating sound installation that has us questioning our own senses. But a new solo song from the enigmatic Sigur Rós frontman is a truly epochal thing—indeed, it’s been a decade since he has graced us with the last.

So his latest single “Exhale” (co-produced by himself and A. G. Cook) is like a monumental gift, at a time when so many things have been or are being taken away from us. And it could not be more relevant to our current situation, with its calming, pensive soundscapes, and his gossamer voice repeating the reassuring mantra, “It isn’t your fault / Just let it go now.”

The accompanying and stunningly realized video, directed by actor Giovanni Ribisi, depicts a dancer hypnotically moving amidst a black polyethylene covering, from which he may be attempting to escape, or just as possibly seek shelter within. As piercing a metaphor as ever.
