Yes, The Shins Are Really, Really Back; Listen to Their New Song, ‘September’

When indie "broke" in the early part of the millennium, bands like The Decemberists and Death Cab for Cutie benefitted from the attention by turning their niche dabblings into full-blown indie populism. Oddly enough, The Shins never did the same thing. Though the band reached overwhelming metaphorical saturation with their inclusion in Garden State, just one album came after that big moment, as members quit the band and others focused on their side projects. The wait is over, I suppose: After a five-year gap since 2007’s Wincing the Night Away, The Shins will release a new album titled Port of Morrow. They’ve got a new lyric video for "September," the B-side to an upcoming 7” split with "Simple Song." Via Gorilla vs. Bear, you can watch it after the click.

"I’ve been selfish and full of pride," frontman James Mercer sings. "And she knows deep down, there’s a little child." A decade later, The Shins are still singing of slowly maturing feelings, bundled up in youth and frustration and all that. But they so clearly see love as a way out rather than a self-hating prism that it’s hard to begrudge their point of view. The "Simple Song" 7” is out on February 14; Port of Morrow is due in March.
