Weekend Recovery: Lyke Giants, ‘Fires Thieving Time’

Bands from Australia: your iTunes library is full of them. Ditto New Zealand. What about Tasmania, though? Aha—then may I introduce Lyke Giants, a moody indie rock band hailing from that apparently devil-infested island.

Fires Thieving Time is their album, produced by Sylvia Massy, who has previously done the honors for Tool and Red Hot Chili Peppers. The first single, however, “Slowly Sinking,” has more the silvery introspective sound of a Frightened Rabbit or even The National. It would certainly take the edge off a brutal, receding weekend.

“The Reins,” though, is more out of the Depeche Mode playbook, with post-rock guitar work. After all, there are plenty of emotional funks to roll around in—why pick just one?
