Twitter Quitters? Nicki Minaj Among Celebs Who Can’t Stay Away
It hasn’t been much more than a week since Nicki Minaj left Twitter, leaving her millions of followers with a rather harsh farewell: tweeting (then deleting) a post that read, "Like seriously, its but so much a person can take. Good fucking bye.”
Although the hasty removal of herself from the site came after a scuffle with a fan over illegally posted music, Minaj said she has other reasons for leaving the social network.
"A lot of times I don’t speak on things, but I don’t want people to think that’s why I deleted my Twitter," she said at the time. "I just needed a moment to myself. Because some page posted things about me — I mean, I’ve read horrible things about myself. I wouldn’t delete my Twitter over that."
Minaj reinstated her account Tuesday, but has yet to post anything. Here’s a few folks who have considered leaving Twitter and just couldn’t kick the habit.
Courtney Love. Perhaps Twitter’s most famous rambler, the Hole frontwoman has been sued for supposedly libelous tweets and no less than her own daughter released a statement saying “Twitter should ban my mother” after Love, who has tweeted from and deleted plenty of handles over the years, used the site to accuse Dave Grohl of hitting on the progeny.
Ashton Kutcher. At one time, Kutcher was one of the most-followed men on the planet, with more than 8 million people tuned in to his tweets. But after he made an uninformed comment about the 2011 firing of Penn State football coach joe Paterno—writing “How do you fire Jo Pa?” during Paterno’s involvement with a pedophilia scandal—Kutcher handed the reins of his account over to his handlers.
Alec Baldwin. After he was famously booted from a flight for refusing to turn off his Words With Friends game, Baldwin also quit Twitter, perhaps hoping to keep his thumbs from getting him into any further trouble. A month later he was back, but who knows how many bon mots that could have changed the world during that time were just never given a chance.
Miley Cyrus. Reportedly at the urging of boyfriend Liam Hemsworth, the Hannah Montana star ditched communicating in 140-character dispatches in 2009. And while she eventually came back to the fold, her departure drove fans crazy, leading some to threaten violence if she didn’t come back soon
