You already know Scarlett Johansson by sight (how can you not?!), but do you know her by the sound of her voice? If you don’t happen to, you might soon. The actress has started up a new band called The Singles, and they are wasting no time in getting the music out there. In fact, she and her bandmates announced the formation of the group by dropping their debut single “Candy”. The track is a synthy good time, one which seems to borrow its base beat from Robyn’s “Call Your Girlfriend”.
The sugary sweet pop track is easy to love, never taking itself too seriously, though that would be tough when comparing your love to a confection, wouldn’t it? The track is a departure from Johansson’s previous releases, all of which have fit more into the singer-songwriter/folk categories. She recorded an album of Tom Waits covers back in 2008, and then a year later worked with Pete Yorn on an original record of collaborations called The Break Up. If you happen to have heard either of those, forget what you know and try “Candy”.
The Singles, and all-girl band comprised of Johansson, Este Haim (of the band HAIM), and three other incredibly talented female musicians, may have just released their first song, but the future of the group may already be in trouble. Not a week after “Candy” hit the web, the band was served a cease-and-desist letter from the representatives of another band with the same name. It looks like Johansson and Co. didn’t do their homework when they named their band, as The Singles have been touring and releasing music for over a decade.
