Rumored Kanye West & Bon Iver Collaboration Finally Hits Web
Remember a couple weeks ago when we told you that Justin Vernon, aka Bon Iver, kicked it at Kanye West’s studio in Hawaii this summer, smoking blunts, recording tracks, and feeling good about his role in the continuing white-boy struggle for hip-hop affirmative action? Well, as part of West’s “G.O.O.D Friday” promise to release new music every Friday, Kanye posted evidence of the collaboration on his blog in the form of “Monster”—available for free streaming and download—a verse-heavy track that also features Jay-Z, Rick Ross, and Nicki Minaj. Disappointingly, “Monster” doesn’t make the best use of Vernon’s vocal abilities; he appears at beginning and the end of the song, singing an auto-tuned refrain about God in an unflattering low register.
The track does have some interesting rapping, particularly from the always unpredictable Kanye, who asks the reflexive question, “Have you ever had sex with a pharaoh?” to which he answers, “Yeah, I put the pussy in a sarcophagus.” For real? Jay-Z’s has a weak if equally disturbing verse in which he discusses raping, pillaging, and how love is his Achilles heel. Lil’ Wayne protege Nicki Minaj steals the show by managing to rhyme “Sri Lanka” with “Willy Wonka.” “Monster” will appear on Jay-Z’s forthcoming five song EP, Watch the Throne.
