The original rebellious rapper M.I.A. released the music video for her new song “The New International Sound Pt. II” yesterday, a collaboration with French producer Surkin and his project Gener8ion. Fans of the badass who made it big with 2009’s “Paper Planes” have something to look forward to — the new beat is only a hint of what’s to come. M.I.A. announced via Instagram last week that she’s working on a three-part mixtape which will be accompanied by a short film. The project will be a self-directed piece of work “with no boundaries and transitions” and will go “country to country.”
Though not part of the upcoming trilogy, the “The New International Sound Pt. II” seems to fit in with M.I.A.’s global aesthetic. Directed by Inigo Westmeier, the video features students 36,000 students at Shaolin Tagou, the largest children’s fighting school in China. Their choreographed training sessions are shot from straight-on angles that add to the intensity of both their craft and the video.
