Katie White From the Ting Tings Gets Pop Quizzed

There’s three main players on stage at a Ting Tings show: frontwoman Katie White, renaissance man (drummer/vocalist/producer) Jules De Martino, and a bass drum that gets the crap beaten out of it when the band plays “Shut Up and Let Me Go,” a song off their debut album We Started Nothing, and which you may have heard on a 2008 iPod commercial. When she’s not dancing around the stage or climbing on things — the aforementioned bass drum included — the feisty Ms. White can be found dreaming about being on holiday or watching the National Geographic channel. But we’ll let her tell you about that, Jules’s sleeping attire, and more in our schizophrenic Pop Quiz.

When you were in elementary school, what did you want to be when you grew up? I always wanted to be a musician. Jules wanted to be an artist and musician.

Do you have any tattoos? Jules has 1, I have 2. Not telling you where!

Are you superstitious? Errr, I’m more paranoid than superstitious. Karma makes sense to me though.

First album you bought? Madonna’s greatest hits. I used to make dance routines up to it in the kitchen. Jules stole his mum’s Elvis. If you could have any super power, what would you choose? Flying. I’m a very nervous flyer, so I could then fly myself and get over my fear, and If I was a bird I could crap on a few peoples heads. A bird crapped in my eyeball once. What restaurant would you eat at every day if you could? I’m a bit fed up of restaurants at the moment, because we have eaten in them every night for a year and a half. So we both would go for home cooked food. Preferably by mums. How many times a day on average do you think about sex? I’ve never counted and don’t intend to! Have you ever been arrested? No for both of us. What’s your guilty pleasure? Doing nothing. Do you have a favorite bar in New York? We never get to go out in New York as we are always too busy, so we always just collapse in our hotel bar after a gig. The bars in Brooklyn look amazing though. We can’t wait to go and visit them. Ever been star struck? Yes. By Michael Palin. When you get good news, who’s the first person you tell it to? I would tell my mum, Jules would tell his family, then we would call our friends. What do you always watch if it’s on TV? Anything on National Geographic, especially air crash investigations and Shark Week. What do you normally sleep in? On the tour bus I would sleep in something warm as I’m always cold with the AC. In hotels or at home, nothing. Jules sleeps in the clothes he doesn’t take off! Where’s the craziest place you’ve had sex? Why on earth would I tell you that? What’s on your computer wallpaper? A street in Manchester, UK. Jules has a photo from a paint party gig we had a month ago. Where do you really want to be right now? On holiday. With a good book and a jet ski parked up on the beach. What’s the first job you ever had? Waitressing. I was terrible. Jules did some graphic design. Favorite Muppets/Sesame Street character? Big Bird. What’s the best advice you ever got? Don’t take advice. Nobody has a clue what they are doing anyway!
