Jay-Z and Alicia Keys’s ‘Empire’ Pushes Sinatra Aside

Hova’s sure to be happy with this one: In a stunning reversal, The New York Racing Association announced that Jay-Z and Alicia Keys’s ‘Empire State of Mind’ (maybe you’ve heard of it?) will replace Frank Sinatra’s ‘New York, New York’ as the official anthem for tomorrow’s Belmont Stakes. Why the change? One racing official said that the song was the “quintessential 21st century theme song for New York City.” When you add this cultural coup to the performance that Jay and Alicia gave before one of the World Series games at Yankee Stadium last fall, it looks like ‘Empire State of Mind’ will end up in the annals of sporting legend. Jay, I guess you could be “the next Sinatra,” after all—pour yourself a Belve cocktail.

According to the AP, teenage singer Jasmine Villegas will give the pre-race performance of ‘Empire State of Mind’ this Saturday. Here’s Jasmine’s single ‘Serious’:

Judge for yourself whether she’s worthy of taking over Alicia’s face-melting vocals:
