Premiere: Grammy Winning Electronic Superwoman Sirah Remixes Golden Coast’s ‘Futurist’

Just when we thought we were getting to know Golden Coast as a sunny, neighborhood indie-pop band, electronic expert Sirah goes and changes their sound on us, making them into something entire new.

The Grammy winner (she is the vocals you hear on Skrillex’s “Bangarang”, and she took home the Best Dance Recording trophy with the dubstep purveyor in 2013) remixed the Los Angeles-based duo’s latest single “Futurist”, and, ironically, updated it in the process.

While the original track—which brings up images of backyard barbeques and reggae shows, is certainly fun and enticing (especially in the dead of winter, when all you want is something to remind you of sun and warmth)—Sirah’s reinvisioning is a work of art on its own.

She brings a trap feel to the pop song, finding the magic of the melody and making it work for an entirely different kind of music. Plenty of pre-produced snares and 808’s, and not to mention her blink-and-you’ll-miss-it rap verse breathe new life into the song, while also showing how versatile both artists truly are.

The remixer jumped at the chance to rework the song, saying “I was excited to take on the remix because their original production for “Futurist” was so different from anything I’ve ever worked on. It was totally out of my genre range, so it was fun to trap them out.”
