Florence + the Machine Announce Return With New Single ‘What Kind Of Man’

Back in time to help save indie rock, powerhouse Florence + the Machine have released their first official single in several years, “What Kind Of Man”. The track is a grandiose affair, which is what we’ve come to expect from the British redhead and her bandmates (who still remain fairly anonymous).

Beginning with a surprising bit of vocal effects—autotune, or something similar—Florence Welch takes her already-haunting vocals to new depths, setting the tone for what the rest of the song has to offer.

After a healthy intro, the guitars begin, revealing a more rock and roll side of the band, one which we’re not used to.

The rest of “What Kind” is familiar, which is great, as nobody does over the top like Florence and co. A full chorus of backup singers brings some drama this troubling song about the dangers of love and sex with the wrong man. A horn section joins the prominent guitars and helps lift the track to new heights.

The corresponding video—released online as the song was getting its first play on British radio—matches the track’s seriousness with plenty of disturbing images, from a devastating car crash to scenes with circles of men. Florence is subtle enough in the video not to be vulgar, but she gets her message across just fine.

“What Kind Of Man” is the first taste from the group’s upcoming third album How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful, which is expected in June.
