Exclusive: Nicki Minaj Reveals Details About “Fly,” Her Apocalyptic New Music Video with Rihanna

When I spoke with Nicki Minaj on Wednesday night (more on that shortly), she was busy preparing her set for this weekend’s episode of Saturday Night Live, in which she’ll appear alongside the host, Oscar nominee Jesse Eisenberg. The hip-hop star couldn’t confirm whether or not she would appear in any of the live sketches, but revealed that she would be participating in a SNL Digital Short, which got her to thinking about her recent music video shoot for “Fly.” (Her new video, “Moment 4 Life,” debuted yesterday.) Widely written about because of the Sapphic tweets sent back and forth between Minaj and Rihanna on set, the “Fly” video is Minaj’s favorite to date. But who knew it was inspired by a Will Smith movie? Not us.

Said Minaj, “We just did the video for ‘Fly’ with Rihanna. I’m most proud of that one. I wanted it to look like the end of the world, and so I sent all of the potential directors the same reference: that Will Smith movie, I Am Legend. The directors then sent in their treatments and I chose Sanaa Hamri’s because it was the best, and because she’s a girl, and we’re girls, and I thought she could do a good job. I wanted it to look strong. I wanted us to be superheroes in this video, but not traditional superheroes—we’re like fashionable superheroes.” When asked if she and Rihanna are fighting against each other, or together against a shared enemy, her publicist stepped in: “We don’t want to ruin the surprise.” Check back here regularly as you’ll be seeing much more of Minaj on this site very shortly.
