Black Kids’ Reggie Youngblood Takes Our Pop Quiz

Before even having a record out, Florida quintet the Black Kids were catapulted in to the spotlight by a music press captivated by their live performances and their Cure-meets-frat-boy-and-sunshine sound. When they finally did release their full-length album Partie Traumatic, it debuted at #5 on the UK charts and ended the year topping best-of lists. The question, then, is where do the kids go from there? Well, they’re currently running a contest for you to have them play at your house party (where they’ll probably not teach your boyfriend how to dance with you), and they’re releasing a vinyl limited-edition of their EP Wizard of Ahhhs on April 18 in honor of Record Store Day. Oh, and they’re on tour Mates of State, hitting the Music Hall of Williamsburg this Sunday and Webster Hall on Monday. But first, lead singer Reggie Youngblood tells us about sleeping in his Snuggie, his love for the year 1988, and guilty feelings about sex in our decidedly childlike Pop Quiz.

When you were in elementary school, what did you want to be when you grew up? I was typical in my youthful aspirations. I wanted to be a ninja.

Do you have any tattoos? I haven’t. All the band’s tattoos belong to the girls.

Are you superstitious? Not really, but I scare easy.

First album you bought? It was either Poison’s Open Up and Say…Ahh! or Bobby Brown’s Don’t Be Cruel. ’88 was dope.

Have you ever been arrested? Yes.

What’s your guilty pleasure? Sex.

Do you have a favorite bar in New York? No, any bar will do.

Ever been star struck? Oh yeah. I saw Johnny Marr play with the Cribs and cried.

When you get good news, who’s the first person you tell it to? When do I get good news?

What do you always watch if it’s on TV? If it’s on, the Arsenio Hall show. 1988 won’t leave me alone!

What do you normally sleep in? A Snuggie.

What’s on your computer wallpaper? Photo of a Momus stuffed doll.

If you could be any literary character, who would you be? Cyrano de Bergerac.

Where do you really want to be right now? New Zealand.

What’s the first job you ever had? Door-to-door missionary.

Favorite Muppets/Sesame Street character? Snuffaluffagus

What’s the best advice you ever got? DO. NOT. PUT. THAT. THERE.
