Listen: Moderna’s Exhilarating ‘Bullet Time’ Remix From ‘The Matrix Resurrections’ Soundtrack

Not only did Beatport create an entire sub-genre – Dark Disco – for her singular acid-electro-techno sound, but apparently she’s even got a COVID vaccine named for her (haha). Missy Livingston was actually born in Utah. But now globally known as Berlin based (by way of New York and LA) DJ Moderna, she evolved a youthful obsession with Aphex Twin – always a good start – into a style that is as inimitable as it’s possible to be in a 21st Century where seemingly everything has otherwise been done before.

She also spent most of the COVID lockdowns valiantly recovering from breast cancer, converting tragedy into a therapeutic burst of creativity. And with a trio of EPs under her belt, plus the regular KCRW Berlin radio show Brave New Rave, she notably caught the attention of writer-producer-director Lana Wachowski, who invited her to contribute a remix to the soundtrack to The Matrix Resurrections, the desperately awaited fourth entry in the epic Matrix film series (and the first since 2003’s The Matrix Revolutions).

And so we have this exhilarating new mix of the tellingly titled ‘Bullet Time” (original music by Johnny Klimek and Tom Tykwer), with its dizzyingly accelerating and decelerating BPM, and palpable cinematic tension. It’s also peppered with select dialogue from the film itself. Indeed, when we hear the again returning Carrie-Anne Moss’ Trinity sneer, “It feels like I have been waiting my whole life for you. What the hell took you so long?,” it comes off like a setup for the entire plot. When she later threatens, “My name is Trinity, and you’d better keep your hands off of me,” the thrillingly heart-racing music only serves to emphasize that this is an order that most definitely needs to be taken seriously.

Ms. Livingston enthuses, “When I was asked by Lana to do a remix for the new Matrix soundtrack I was absolutely thrilled to say the least. [The series] played an important role in my creative life throughout the years, and I was extremely grateful for the opportunity.”

Omicron be damned, Moderna will also be taking the new music on the road, with gigs in Mexico and Brazil before 2021 closes out, and more to be announced soon. Watch her FB page for specific details.

The Matrix Resurrections, again starring Moss and Keanu Reeves (as well as Priyanka Chopra, Jada Pinkett-Smith and Christina Ricci), will be in theaters December 22 via Village Roadshow Pictures.
