Here is the Title Reveal For the Upcoming Amazon ‘Lord of the Rings’ Series

Whether you cared about it or not, Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings film trilogy (2001 – 2003) was arguably the biggest cinematic event of our lifetime – or maybe even ever. After all, whatever the level of geekdom for Star Wars, in terms of gravitas, it doesn’t come within spitting distance of LOTR.

The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers and The Return of the King would ultimately do nearly three billion dollars in worldwide box office. And just to rub it in, the spinoff Hobbit trilogy did nearly the same. But everything is different now in the age of streaming – New Line doesn’t even exist anymore…while Netflix’ and Amazon’s coffers verily runneth over. So no one really even blinked when in 2017 the latter ponied up $250 million to produce a Lord of the Rings series. And more than four years later, the whole thing still shadowed in secrecy, we at last get the first video teaser, released today, which is actually the title reveal.

Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is meant to act as a prequel – which is obviously the trendy thing to do – taking us back thousands of years earlier to Tolkien’s Second Age, and the forging of the iconic rings. And in the clip, above a suite of dramatic strings, we here a chilling voiceover:

“Three Rings for the Elven-kings under the sky,

Seven for the Dwarf-lords in their halls of stone,

Nine for Mortal Men doomed to die,

One for the Dark Lord on his dark throne

In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.”

Seriously, it’s enough to make us start counting the days until its September 2, 2022 premiere. As for the name that was chosen for the series, showrunner J.D. Payne explains that they hoped for it to sound like it could have been an actual Tolkien tome.

“This is a title that we imagine could live on the spine of a book next to J.R.R. Tolkien’s other classics,” he says. “The Rings of Power unites all the major stories of Middle-Earth’s Second Age: the forging of the rings, the rise of the Dark Lord Sauron, the epic tale of Númenor, and the Last Alliance of Elves and Men. Until now, audiences have only seen on-screen the story of the One Ring – but before there was one, there were many.”

Ring it on…
